On March 31, 2025, Microsoft will end support for instrumentation key-based global ingestion in Azure Monitor’s Application Insights. After this date, while your resources will still receive data, updates and customer support related to this method will no longer be available. This change marks the transition from global endpoints to regional ones that utilize connection strings, offering benefits like authenticated telemetry ingestion, regional data residency, and endpoint customization for intranet or hybrid environments.
To continue receiving technical support post-March 2025, it’s crucial to migrate your resources to use connection string-based ingestion before the deadline.
Sitecore
For Sitecore Experience Platform deployments as Azure Web Apps, this transition is particularly relevant. Microsoft has added support for Application Insights via Connection Strings across various Sitecore releases, including minor code and configuration updates in XM and XP topologies. For example, Sitecore XP 10.4 offers a pre-release version to enable connection strings through KB1003424. Users of older versions like XP 10.1–10.3 will have support added in upcoming cumulative hotfixes targeted for delivery in February 2025. Similarly, Sitecore Identity Server module support is set to be included starting with its 8.0 release, featuring a new ARM template for deployment on Azure App Service.
Summary
In summary, while the existing instrumentation key method will continue functioning post-March 31, 2025, it’s advisable to migrate to connection strings to leverage enhanced features and maintain support continuity.
